PRESS RELEASE

Unusual Visitor Booked for Railcar Gala

A diesel railbus which has never worked on another heritage railway since it was preserved in 1968 is to be the star attraction at the Llangollen Railway’s Railcar gala on June 26th and 27th.

German-built railbus 79964 went to the infant Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in the year that Prime Minister Harold Wilson urged us to “back Britain”, at a time when the Vietnam War was in full swing and in the same year as the last steam engine was withdrawn from regular service.

It last went off KWVR metals when it visited Doncaster Works 30 years ago.

The railbus will be at Llangollen for one weekend only – and will arrive the day before the event, returning to its home railway the day after. Built in 1957 by Wagon Und Maschinenbau in Germany the railbuses were designed to save branch lines which had little traffic. Unfortunately they were unable to do so and were declared surplus when still relatively new. Two were bought for the KWVR and have worked there ever since. 79964 is fitted with AEC power equipment and this will be the first time that an AEC-engined railbus has tackled the gradients at Llangollen.

The gala will also see the entry to service of class 108 trailer 56223, which was recently obtained from the East Anglian Railway Museum. It will be paired with class 127 51618, which will appear in a new livery.

Three other railcar sets will be in action, consisting of examples of classes 104, 108 and the award-winning and unique Wickham. There will also be a steam auto-train which will be worked by GW Pannier 6430 so that passengers can compare the two forms of traction.

Fifteen trains will operate each day each way, three of which will be steam-hauled, and there will be additional shuttles on the Saturday evening to a barbeque event. All-day rover tickets will be available at a competitive price.
