Llangollen Station

The area between Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and the Horseshoe Falls has been designated a World Heritage site, and this includes Llangollen and Berwyn stations.

Llangollen is the eastern terminus of the railway. The station, complete with original Victorian buildings and structures, offers many facilities. There is a shop containing branded Llangollen Railway clothing, pocket money toys, a selection of books and souvenirs. You can buy your ticket here, except for special events, when the Booking Office is open. Refreshments are available in the licensed station cafe.  There are toilets and baby changing facilities near the far end of Platform 1.

The station is always manned, and the volunteers will be pleased to help with information about the railway and surrounding area. Passengers with mobility difficulties will be helped onto the train, using a ramp where necessary.

There are 2 disabled parking spaces which are available on a first come, first served basis, other limited parking is reserved for staff.

The town of Llangollen must be visited. There are many independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. The River Dee runs parallel to the railway station.

Just out of town you can visit Plas Newydd house and gardens, former home of the Ladies of Llangollen. Out the opposite side of town there is the Motor Museum. Both of these attractions are walkable.

The Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union canal runs through the town. Leaving the railway cross the road and look up – the canal is at a higher level than the railway. Here you can take a horse drawn barge in a westerly direction, or, for a longer trip, take a barge in an easterly direction across the Pontcysyllte aqueduct, about 4 miles distant.

The more energetic might like to hike up to Castell Dinas Bran, the ruined castle on the hill. It’s a strenuous climb but you will be rewarded by magnificent views along the Dee Valley and the Berwyn mountains.

There is a Tourist Information Office in Llangollen. Walk over the bridge and up Castle St.  The Tourist Information Office is on the right, about 3 minutes’ walk from the station. The staff can give you information about the attractions mentioned, and many others.
