Dig out your flares or mini-skirt ready to sample the atmosphere of the 1960’s on a Welsh branch line!
We are delighted to welcome our much-loved 1960s Weekend back to our events calendar in 2024. This vibrant celebration will take place on the 3rd and 4th of August 2024 and promises to be an action-packed weekend for everyone.
The 1960s were an era of change for the railways, marked by the transition from steam to diesel, railcar, and electric services, alongside the pivotal ‘Reshaping Of British Railways’ Report, which led to the closure of many rural lines, including what is now the Llangollen & Corwen Railway. Our event will faithfully recreate the ambiance of the British rail network as it was in the 1960s, featuring an intensive timetable operated by steam, diesel, and railcar trains. Additionally, a vintage rail replacement bus will be in operation, and you can witness a re-enacted protest against the line’s closure!
Visitors are encouraged to embrace the spirit of the decade by dressing in period attire. Expect to be immersed in the sights and sounds synonymous with the 1960s, including live music, classic cars, passengers in authentic period clothing, grumpy porters loading parcels onto trains, and an exhibition about the line’s history.
Take the controls of our Class 08 Shunter at Corwen with our Driver-for-a-Fiver experience*, offering a unique hands-on opportunity for enthusiasts. Additionally, browse the various stalls at Llangollen Station for vintage treasures and railway memorabilia.
In addition to the day time schedule, an Evening Dance* and Real Ale Bar complete with live music. will be held on Llangollen Station on Saturday Evening. A rail service will be in operation to transport attendees to and from the dance, ensuring a full evening of entertainment.
